Drop abuse case against Ex-Olympics CEO: lawyer
VANCOUVER - A lawyer for former Olympics CEO John Furlong has asked a B.C. Supreme Court judge to dismiss a sexual abuse lawsuit against his client and award special costs.
Bill Smart, who says the claimant made up a series of lies in filing the suit, outlined counter allegations on the first day of the trial, which began without the man appearing in court.
Furlong has vehemently denied the claims related to when he was a teacher at a Roman Catholic school in northern B.C., starting in the late 1960s.
On Friday, a judge ruled against allowing the Prince Rupert, B.C., resident from participating in the trial by telephone after he hung up during a pre-trial conference.
Last month, a judge threw out a separate sexual abuse claim against Furlong by Grace West after Beverly Abraham dropped her lawsuit in December.
The three cases involving allegations against Furlong surfaced in 2012 after a Vancouver-based weekly newspaper published an article saying Furlong abused students at the school.

Doetse strikes Olympics win over All Stars
Doetse strikes in Olympics' win
by Stephen Amos 29 March 2015, 17:48
Great Olympics continued their upward surge on the FCPPL log with a 1-0 home win over All Stars in Accra on Saturday.
The visitors failed to score in the first half despite pinning their hosts to play second best all through the opening exchanges.
A tweak in tactics by Olympics gaffer Yaw Acheampong managed to subdue All Stars’ overwhelming dominance and they were rewarded with the only goal of the game just before the hour mark.
“In the first half we decided to go in with a 4-3-3 system but we saw that it was very difficult to break through their defence so we came back [in the second half] and changed the system and things went our way,” Acheampong told SuperSport while admitting to his side’s first half struggle.
“It was a difficult game though,” he quickly added.
On 58 minutes, forward Agbashie Doetse headed down from a corner-kick which bounced off the ground to beat goalie Richard Ofori after being left unmarked by the All Stars defence.
Despite taking the lead, Olympics were kept on the edge for most parts of the remaining half hour but did well to defend their lines to seal their sixth win after match day 12.
“The result could have been different. It is just unfortunate in football when the luck is not there because the only goal they got, they scored.”
“Sometimes when you create all the chances and you don’t score you get punished,” All Stars coach Jimmy Korblah told supersport.com after his side’s fifth defeat in 12 games.
The win moves Olympics to 18 points – one above Saturday’s opponents, All Stars.
Match day 12 of the 2015 FCPPL continues on Sunday with the following fixtures:
New Edubiase v Bechem Utd
Hearts of Lions v Medeama SC
Aduana Stars v Berekum Chelsea
Hasaacas v WAFA
B.A United v AshantiGold
Inter Allies v Hearts of Oak
Kotoko v Liberty Professionals
Winter Olympics inspectors positive after Beijing visit
BEIJING (AP) — International Olympic Committee inspectors are departing Beijing after offering a positive evaluation of the Chinese capital’s bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The inspectors’ departure Sunday follows a news conference at which Evaluation Commission chairman Alexander Zhukov affirmed Beijing’s embrace of the IOC’s goals for a more frugal, sustainable and athlete-centered games.
Beijing is vying to become the first city to host both the summer and winter games. Its bid relies heavily on the experience and infrastructure gained by its hosting of the 2008 Summer Olympics, along with expanding the appeal of winter sports in the world’s most populous nation.
Beijing’s inspections and presentations appeared to go off without a hitch, although the city’s air pollution remained at high levels throughout the inspectors’ visit.
Olympics is not everything: Pankaj Advani
Even as snooker is vying for an appearance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 12-time World billiards and snooker champion Pankaj Advani feels that taking part in the once-in-four-year affair may not be the only path to achieve sporting greatness.
Advani, who gave up playing professional snooker in UK to resume his amateur career, said taking part in the Olympics might not be the ultimate achievement for every sportsperson. “I think our country is too obsessed with Olympics. If you say Olympics is the biggest event I cannot agree with you because it is an event that happens once in four years. You mean to say that an athlete should continue to train for four years so that he gets a medal in the Olympics,” Advani, who was here to participate in the RKG Open Snooker Series, told The Hindu. “I think it is about the consistency of an athlete, it is about how often you win titles and how dominating you are in your field. That actually defines greatness. Olympic is a mega event, it is a great stage to be on and it is good to be part of it. I do not think it is the be-all of all sports.
“When Roger Federer was asked if he would prefer winning the Wimbledon or the Olympics, he said ‘I would prefer winning the Wimbledon over the Olympics any day’.
“We would love to be there with cue sports as part of the Asian Games and the Olympics, but life goes on,” added Advani.
Advani, who turns 30 this year, was happy to be back in India. “After two years, I realised that this is not my thing. I was missing family, staying (out) six to eight months in a year. I could not see myself doing this for a long time. My main purpose of going there was to improve as a player and I had improved in those two years... If you look at the results, it shows — I won a lot of titles last year,” said Advani, who won the World 6-Red championship last year to make a world record of winning world titles in all formats of billiards and snooker.
