Wittenberg exits as head of N.Y. Road Runners

NEW YORK -- Mary Wittenberg is leaving after 10 years as president and CEO of New York Road Runners, the organization in charge of the New York City Marathon.

Road Runners said Tuesday that Wittenberg's two top deputies, Michael Capiraso and Peter Ciaccia, will take over its leadership. Wittenberg is becoming global CEO of a new lifestyle company, Virgin Sport.

Wittenberg joined Road Runners in 1998 and became its first female executive in 2005. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Wittenberg were criticized for initially deciding the 2012 NYC Marathon should be held despite widespread damage of Hurricane Sandy. The marathon was canceled two days before the race.

The NYC Marathon is the largest in the world, with more than 50,000 runners. This year's race is Nov. 1.
